NAMI Basics

The fundamentals of caring for you and your child with mental illness.

NAMI Basics is a free education program for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illnesses.  The NAMI Basics course is taught by trained teachers who are the parent or other caregivers of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental illness prior to the age of 13 years.

The program consists of six 2 1/2 hour classes of instructional material, discussions and interactive exercises, which may be offered weekly for six consecutive weeks, or may be offered twice per week for three weeks to accommodate the hectic schedules of parents

Program curriculum includes:

  • Managing crises, solving problems and communicating effectively
  • How to take care of yourself and handle stress
  • Developing the confidence and stamina to support your child with compassion
  • Advocating for your child’s rights at school and in health care settings
  • Learning about current treatments, including evidence-based therapies, medications and side effects
  • Gaining an overview of the public mental health care, school and juvenile justice systems and resources
  • Understanding the challenges and impact of mental health conditions on your entire family
  • In addition to the core six classes, additional topic modules will be available for independent presentations
